Summer 2017 Potato Hack…Age

The potato hack is especially useful for “older” folks who’ve slowly gained weight over the past 10, 20, 30 years to a point where their weight is effecting their overall health and well-being.

Until recently everyone thought that middle-aged people got fat because they did not move around as much as youngsters and ate too much…but this line of thought has changed dramatically with the discovery of an enzyme. DNA-dependent protein kinase, or DNA-PK, activity changes considerably when we reach middle age. Researchers surmise that if we could inhibit DNA-PK, we could change the way we manage our weight as we age.

Our society attributes the weight gain and lack of exercise at mid-life (approximately 30-60 years) primarily to poor lifestyle choices and lack of will power, but this study shows that there is a genetic program driven by an overactive enzyme that promotes weight gain and loss of exercise capacity at mid-life.

This newfound knowledge has Big Pharma scrambling to develop a DNA-PK inhibitor, but guess what?  We already have one…


There’s a substance in potatoes that scares some researchers so bad they say that humans should never eat a potato in any way, shape, or form. This is a basic tenet of the Paleo Diet. This substance is solanine, a natural chemical found in potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants and a couple other universally recognized healthy foods. In isolation and concentrated, solanine can kill, but when found in normal levels it’s now considered to be one of the health-promoting properties of a diet that contains potatoes. Another substance found in potatoes, vanillin, is being studied for its ability to inhibit DNA-PK.

So, if you are 30+ and you find you are having trouble maintaining your weight like you used to, try using the potato hack to keep things under control. Maybe one day we’ll have a pill for it, but until then use the pills nature provides…

    I’ve been reading the daily posts leading up to the start of the potato hack here and now am convinced that I need to try more potatos! I am 59 and definitely having trouble with digestion and weight problems. Not too much weight, but scale isn’t budging. Thanks for this. Also, going back to reread the book.
