Summer Reading, 2018

PBS: What’s Living Inside You

A couple items caught my eye recently. First, a video that aired on PBS last week about the gut. Here’s the full video, and a related article from PBS.  Essentially they lay out the story of the human gut, discuss fecal transplants, and describe the importance of a healthy microbiome. Well worth the watch if you have an hour to spare.

In my opinion, they missed a great opportunity to discuss diet more than just avoiding junk food. They did not talk about fiber, resistant starch, or plant-heavy diets. This would have been the perfect time to tell the public how healthy potatoes really are.

Diabetes-Gut Flora Connection

In the 2018 research paper, Understanding the role of the gut ecosystem in diabetes mellitus, the authors lay out a good framework for how diabetes begins in the gut.

As diabetes is multifactorial and can progress to other related metabolic diseases, such as cardiovascular problems, it is of utmost importance that the delicate interrelationships between gut microbiota and host metabolism are well understood in order to suggest appropriate lifestyle and nutritional interventions by engineering an optimal gut environment towards the prevention and maintenance remission of diabetes (Fig. (Fig.2).2).

I sense that the authors grasped the enormously complex task of “engineering an ideal gut ecosystem.” While it’s great that people are studying this, Big Pharma has not come up with anything much better than eat right and exercise. Perhaps someday they’ll replicate the successes of fecal transplants with probiotic pills that contain ALL of the bacteria that make us healthy humans. And when they do, it’ll still be up to you to feed and care for this new gut flora.

Hope you have a great summer!

Seeing if anybody can recommend a different brand of probiotics, please? Elixa isn’t shipping to Canada at the moment. Wife is on 7 day course of abx. We’re getting fermented foods, veggies and fruits in her every day but as they say, “punches in bunches” right?
Or even any other tips or links would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Hello, I am on your site for the first time and just wanted to let you know I find it hard to navigate and find things I am interested in. Not intending to be critical, just thought you might want to know. Thanks.
